Les dessous de la bouboutonik

-description

Commentaire :

In this fashionable Parisian discotheque a group of young dancers are getting ready for a video shoot. Their employer is the young man in the red shirt, Moussa Niang, a 30-year-old French man from Senegal.

Moussa is not a newcomer to television: In 2006 he reached the finals in a French reality TV programme watched by millions of viewers. And he recently began hosting his own show on a pan-African TV channel.

The concept is simple: viewers can follow auditions spread out over a period of four months. The aim is to train a dance troupe for the Bouboutonik project. We met Moussa in the modest offices of his company, Welcome Production, to find out more.

Moussa Niang, Producer:

« Bouboutonik has been around for a long time with a musical mix of electro, afro and hip-hop with artists like Bob Sinclar, Magic System, and Mokobé… in fact a lot of artists have mixed these musical styles but there has never been a hard core group. Bouboutonik is the hard core that brings it all together. »

Commentaire :

Moussa is the first to admit that he hasn’t invented a new concept: the video of Africatonik by rapper Mokobé and the singer Mory Kanté, featured this explosive cocktail of electro,  hip hop and ‘coupé-décalé’ moves. Chris, choreographer for the bouboutonik troupe and the hip tektonic dance group, Mondotek, explains that the hybrid has been around in Africa for a while.

Chris, Choreographer:

« When we were on tour with Mondotek we visited quite a few African countries, like the Ivory Coast for example. They do the tektonik dance with a touch of ‘coupé-décalé’. We felt at home there: they had the same ‘bounce’ as electro dancers but it was African. So I don’t think we invented anything, we are just trying to highlight something that was already there. »

Commentaire :

Moussa took the idea on board and, above all, knew how to market it…

Moussa Niang, Producer

« Bouboutonik is a ray of sunlight showing us how to dance, it gives us the right vibes and sounds; it shows you the right steps when you’re dancing in parties with your brightly-coloured caps and t-shirts. »

Commentaire :

Organised parties where you can get to grips with the afro-electro mix; the right clothes ; a compilation ; a tour, and most of all, a DVD to tell you about Bouboutonik and get you out dancing in parties. A recipe for success…

« We want to get everyone dancing like us and mixing styles. »

Commentaire :

While he admits having invested heavily in the project, Moussa Niang didn’t want to give a precise figure or more details about the source of the funding. However most of the money he earns comes from the parties he organises at least once a week and which attract 400 to 700 people. At 27 dollars a head Moussa makes approximately 13,000 dollars from which he has to pay for staging the event and hiring the venue. The remaining ingredients behind the success of Bouboutonik are a lengthy guest list, sexy dancers, hip-hop, electro and ‘coupé-décalé’ dancers, a sprinkling of VIPS and, for those who didn’t get to the party, a film of the event broadcast each week on the Net.

« We don’t print flyers anymore. We used to hand them out in the street but our clientele is more handpicked now. We have mailing lists, publicity on the Net and all the other means of communication such as Skyblog, Facebook, etc. »

Commentaire :

Some of the dancers actually discovered Bouboutonik on the Internet…

William, Dancer :

« I have a group of friends who surf a lot on the Net. They saw info about Bouboutonik on Dailymotion, Youtube and other search motors. They said I should go and see what I could do with Moussa Niang. That’s where I first heard about it.”

Commentaire :

Thanks to the Internet he has been able to set up his own site and sell advertising space to sponsors, making it his second source of income. Moussa gave us a crash course on raising capital…

Moussa Niang, Producer :

“You study the project and draw up a budget. Once that is done you start looking for funding. You contact the sponsors that you are interested in. When you are looking for capital for a project you have to ask yourself what communication potential you are offering. We have an Internet site with lots of hits, we have a Skyblog and lots of other tools so we have a pretty high profile.”

Commentaire :

To cut costs the young entrepreneur works mainly with   service providers. Moussa Niang is self-taught and a master of all trades, working as a manager, organiser and caterer.  He is clearly not lacking people skills and his address book is full of useful contacts. Even when he is being interviewed by sports journalists asking about his career as world champion in the Chinese martial art, Sanda, he is still battling for his project.

Other self-employed African businessmen like Mohammed Dia and Malamine Koné have managed to get a foothold in international markets. With his make-do and velvet tongue, Moussa Niang should soon be following in their footsteps. The competition will be out for the count if he shows as much determination as he did in the boxing ring….
