Country: KENYA
Description:
On Thursday 31st March, the UN Environmental Programme (UNEP) officially moved into its new home. The structure, which will be energy and climate neutral, will have a carbon footprint of zero. Leading the inauguration ceremony was Mwai Kibaki, president of Kenya and Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations at the building’s site on the outskirts of Kenya’s capital. The site will house the headquarters of UNEP, the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), as well as the UN office in Nairobi.
The project is a result of a partnership between the UN, local architects and contractors and international technology firms including Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, Philips and others. The four buildings house 1,200 staff and feature 6,000 square metres of solar panels, automated low-energy lighting, solar water heaters and energy efficient computers.
