Born on April 1st, 1940, Wangari Maathai was the first woman in East and Central Africa to earn a doctorate degree, that even in Biological Sciences. She subsequently achieved a Master of Science degree. She obtained her PhD in 1971. Wangari Maathai has gone tremendously far and has also played a large role in the Green Belt Movement which allowed her to achieve the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize, her highest achievement yet, as well as many more prizes.
